Alibaba's Qwen team has unveiled Qwen 3.8, a 2.4-trillion-parameter open-weight model that the company says matches frontier systems and trails only Anthropic's Fable 5. The release, reported by Bloomberg, the South China Morning Post, and The Economic Times, lands at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026 in Shanghai and intensifies an already heated contest between Chinese labs for the top of the model leaderboard.

Billed as "Qwen3.8-Max-Preview," the model is being offered through Alibaba's Token Plan and its Qoder and QoderWork developer platforms at roughly 10 percent of the standard price, according to The Decoder. Developer Shuai Bai told The Decoder that it is also the team's first multimodal model with more than one trillion parameters, capable of processing images, videos, and documents in a single system.

According to The Decoder, it was the first time a Chinese model claimed the top spot on that benchmark, a result that jolted Western labs.

The picture is more mixed on harder reasoning. Epoch AI data cited by The Decoder shows Kimi K3 reaching only about 39 percent accuracy on FrontierMath Tier 4, the benchmark's hardest expert-level math tasks, where models from OpenAI and Anthropic score close to 90 percent in some cases. That gap is precisely the opening Qwen 3.8 is aiming to close, pitching strength in coding and multimodal work as the more commercially relevant battleground.

Pricing Pressure From China

Qwen 3.8 also arrives amid a broader pricing squeeze that is reshaping how frontier models are sold. The Decoder reports that Anthropic is sharply cutting Claude Fable 5 access limits in its Max and Team Premium plans starting July 20, while pushing Pro subscribers toward metered API pricing with a one-time usage credit. The shift reflects demand the company has struggled to manage, but also competitive pressure: OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol offers similar performance at roughly a third of the cost, and Chinese labs are undercutting everything below the frontier tier.

Against that backdrop, a 2.4-trillion-parameter model priced at a tenth of the standard rate is a direct challenge to the subscription economics that Western labs have built their revenue around.
