Amazon said it will invest an additional $13 billion to expand its artificial intelligence and cloud footprint in India through 2030, deepening a spending spree that has made the country one of the world's fastest-growing markets for computing infrastructure. The announcement, reported by TechCrunch, came after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

The fresh capital will fund the expansion of Amazon Web Services' data center capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad, two cities that have become hubs for the computing power needed to train and run AI products. The investment marks Amazon's third major commitment for India in as many years.

In 2023, following an earlier meeting between Jassy and Modi, the company pledged $15 billion by 2030, including $12.7 billion for AWS. It followed that with an over $35 billion commitment in December 2025. With the latest pledge, Amazon's total investment commitments in India now stand at roughly $48 billion, though the company did not detail exactly how that total will be split across its various India businesses. Long-term commitments by technology companies typically include both capital and operating expenditures rather than only new infrastructure spending.

A Global Scramble for Indian Compute

Amazon's move is part of a broader wave of investment by global technology companies betting that India will become a major hub for the infrastructure underpinning artificial intelligence. Microsoft said in December it would invest $17.5 billion in India by 2029, and Google announced in October that it would spend $15 billion to build an AI hub and data center infrastructure in the country.

India has also attracted billions of dollars in commitments for data center projects from a range of investors, including Australia's AirTrunk, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and domestic conglomerates Reliance Industries and the Adani Group. The rush reflects how demand for AI compute is reshaping global infrastructure spending, pushing hyperscalers and specialized providers to build out capacity wherever land, power, and favorable policy align.

Policy Sweeteners and Retail Ambitions

New Delhi has actively courted this investment through policy incentives. The government offers tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers on services sold overseas, provided those workloads are run from Indian data centers, a measure designed to position the country as an export base for cloud and AI services.

Amazon is simultaneously investing in its domestic retail and logistics network. The company plans to open more than 20 fulfillment centers and over 100 last-mile delivery stations in India this year, and it detailed plans to expand its quick-commerce service, Amazon Now, to more than 300 cities and towns. That expansion puts Amazon in direct competition with Eternal-owned Blinkit, Swiggy's Instamart, Zepto, and Walmart-owned Flipkart, which separately said it plans to open 1,500 micro-fulfillment centers across the country by the end of 2026.

Amazon's move also highlights a shift in how hyperscalers think about geographic risk. With AI demand straining power grids and land availability in traditional hubs like the United States and Ireland, companies are diversifying where they build. India offers a large engineering workforce, improving renewable energy capacity, and a government eager to fast-track digital infrastructure projects, factors that help explain why commitments from the three largest Western cloud providers now total tens of billions of dollars.

The competition is not only Western. Indian conglomerates are racing to build their own AI infrastructure, and regional cloud providers are expanding rapidly, meaning Amazon's bet is as much about defending market share as it is about meeting new demand.

For Amazon, the India buildout serves multiple strategic purposes. Locating AWS capacity closer to India's vast user base reduces latency for local businesses adopting cloud and AI tools, while the country's relatively lower costs and supportive policy environment make it an attractive place to site the energy-intensive data centers that AI demands. As AI workloads grow, hyperscalers are racing to secure enough compute in the regions where demand is concentrated, and India's combination of scale, growth, and government backing has made it a priority.

The $48 billion total also underscores how decisively Amazon has committed to India after years of regulatory friction. Taken together with Microsoft's and Google's pledges, the investments signal that the country is no longer just a consumer market for technology, it is becoming a core node in the global infrastructure that will train and serve the next generation of AI.
