Google has thrown its weight behind Proxima Fusion, joining German utility RWE in a record €411 million ($468 million) funding round that values the Munich-based startup at roughly €2.4 billion. Announced on July 7, 2026 and reported by Reuters, Bloomberg, and Sifted, the round marks the largest-ever private investment in European fusion — and a pointed bet by the world's biggest buyer of AI compute that the long-promised technology of fusion power may finally be within reach.

The round was led by XTX Ventures and East X Ventures, and drew a broad syndicate including KfW Capital, SPRIND, Burda Principal Investments, and returning backers such as Balderton, Cherry Ventures, DST Global Partners, Lightspeed, and the European Innovation Council Fund.

Proxima is pursuing a design known as a stellarator, a notoriously complex but potentially more stable approach to fusion than the tokamak used by most competitors. The company is one of several racing to demonstrate that fusion — the process that powers the sun — can be harnessed commercially on Earth.

"Europe is racing with the United States and China to get to the first fusion power plant," Proxima chief executive Francesco Sciortino said. "Proxima's financing demonstrates that Europe can not only invent breakthrough technologies, but also build globally competitive companies around them."

From demonstrator to power plant

The new capital is earmarked for Proxima's next major milestone: Alpha, a net-energy stellarator demonstrator planned near Munich and targeted for completion in the early 2030s. Alpha is intended to bridge the gap between fusion research and commercial deployment, paving the way for Stellaris, the company's first commercial stellarator power plant, later in the decade.

Proxima has also lined up a site for its eventual commercial plant. RWE, the German utility that joined the round, has agreed to partner on building the first stellarator power station on the grounds of a former nuclear fission plant in Gundremmingen, Bavaria — repurposing the infrastructure of the atomic age for what Proxima hopes will be its successor. Why an AI company is investing in fusion

Google's involvement is the detail that ties the round to the broader technology landscape. The motivation is sharpened by AI. Sciortino's framing of a race among the three reflects a growing consensus that whichever region demonstrates a viable commercial fusion plant first could gain a durable advantage in energy-intensive industries — artificial intelligence chief among them.

Significant hurdles remain. No private company has yet produced a fusion power plant that generates electricity competitively, and timelines measured in decades mean that fusion will do nothing to ease AI's near-term power crunch. Critics note that the technology has famously been "thirty years away" for generations.

A long-odds hedge on the future

For Google, the Proxima investment is best understood as a hedge — a relatively small bet, against the scale of its overall spending, on an outcome that could reshape the economics of computing if it succeeds. For Proxima, the backing of one of the world's most resourceful technology companies lends credibility and capital at a critical stage.
