OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, a program that will provide free access to its frontier AI models to up to 100,000 scientists at selected academic institutions worldwide. The initiative, announced on July 29, 2026, begins with an initial cohort of 10,000 researchers and is part of a broader commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research and discovery. What researchers receive
Approved participants gain access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex, including the GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model at launch. The program is designed for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers, and each approved participant can invite up to four collaborators from the same institution. Researchers receive expanded deep research capabilities, higher usage limits, and larger context windows than standard accounts.
The service includes more than 75 life science skills covering genetics, genomics, sequencing, single-cell analysis, protein modelling, and drug discovery. Connectors built into the platform provide access to scientific literature, public genomic and clinical databases, satellite imagery, computational notebooks, data platforms, and reference managers. According to OpenAI, researcher data is not used to train its models by default.
Institutions and eligibility
At launch, access is already available at institutions including the Institute for Advanced Study and the École normale supérieure. In Australia, eligible institutions include the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, Australian National University, Monash University, the University of Queensland, the University of Technology Sydney, RMIT University, and Macquarie University.
Applicants must verify their institutional affiliation and provide information about their active research and intended scientific use. Each invited collaborator must also verify their affiliation and counts toward the program's total number of accounts. For institutions already using ChatGPT Edu, access is coordinated through the existing workspace.
A $250 million research commitment
The program is part of OpenAI's broader funding strategy for scientific research. The more than $250 million committed through 2027 includes NextGenAI, a $50 million initiative for research institutions, and a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission for researchers at national laboratories and universities.
OpenAI reports that approximately 1.3 million people already use ChatGPT for advanced science and mathematics each week, generating roughly 8.4 million messages. The company says adoption has become particularly visible in mathematics, where AI has shifted over the past six months from occasional use on isolated problems to more regular integration in research workflows. Academic papers acknowledging ChatGPT's contribution are also on the rise.
According to OpenAI, researchers who use AI most intensively in their fields are almost twice as likely as their peers to assign it tasks estimated to require four hours or more.
Real-world research applications
OpenAI highlighted several examples of researchers already using its tools. Physicist Rogerio Jorge and his team are using AI to develop open-source fusion research software used by industry and national laboratories to design fusion energy devices. In another case, researchers Barna Saha, Yinzhan Xu, and Christopher Ye used GPT-5.5 Pro to develop a proof on limits in high-dimensional geometry problems before validating and refining the results themselves.
The company says ChatGPT is being used to question ideas, gather knowledge, generate hypotheses, and communicate findings, while Codex assists with writing code, formal analysis, and reviewing results. Cited use cases span fusion research, theoretical computer science, genomics, and protein modelling.
Model weights remain off-limits
Despite the expanded access, OpenAI is not releasing model weights through the program. The frontier models remain proprietary and closed, meaning researchers can use them through the ChatGPT interface but cannot inspect, modify, or run them locally. This distinction is significant for researchers studying AI safety, interpretability, or reproducibility, who have long called for greater transparency into how frontier models function internally.
OpenAI's strategy, according to the company, is to put capable tools in the hands of the research community and let researchers pursue the questions they know best. The program also includes training tailored to different levels of AI experience, from first-time users to researchers developing advanced applications.
Feedback from participants will be used to assess where the models are useful, where they fall short, and how they can be improved for the research community, OpenAI says.
Competition to win over the scientific community
The launch places OpenAI in direct competition with other AI labs racing to establish themselves as the default tool for academic research. Google DeepMind has built its reputation on scientific applications, from AlphaFold's protein structure predictions to advances in mathematics and materials science. Anthropic has positioned its Claude models as research-oriented tools favored by academics for tasks requiring careful reasoning and long-context analysis.
By offering free, enhanced access to its most capable models, OpenAI is betting that removing cost barriers will deepen its foothold in universities and research institutions — the same environments that produce the next generation of AI researchers and the scientific breakthroughs that demonstrate AI's real-world value. The program also serves a strategic function: researchers who build workflows around OpenAI's tools are more likely to become long-term customers and advocates.
The timing is notable.
