OpenAI announced on Friday that it will end developers' access to its models through Cursor, the AI-powered coding platform acquired earlier this month by Elon Musk's SpaceX. The proposed shutoff date is November 12, 2026, according to CNBC, which first reported the decision. The move marks the most consequential escalation yet in the long-running feud between OpenAI and Musk, and it puts one of the world's most popular AI coding tools squarely in the middle.

Why OpenAI Is Pulling Its Models

In its announcement, OpenAI did not mince words about the reasoning. "We are making this choice because we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts," the company said, as quoted by CNBC.

That statement references years of litigation and acrimony between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Musk, who left OpenAI's board in 2018 and later sued the company over its transition to a for-profit structure — a case that played out in a California federal courtroom as recently as April. SpaceX, before going public in June, absorbed both Musk's social network X and his AI lab xAI in February, giving the rocket company direct control of a rival frontier-model developer. Cursor's biggest model supplier is wasting no time. Following OpenAI's announcement, reports from Wccftech and other outlets said Anthropic vowed to increase Claude compute available to Cursor, positioning itself as the stable partner as OpenAI exits.
