Qualcomm has completed its acquisition of Modular, the artificial intelligence infrastructure company behind the Mojo programming language, closing the transaction on July 29, 2026, roughly five weeks after the deal was first announced. The all-stock purchase brings one of the most respected compiler engineers in the industry, Chris Lattner, into Qualcomm's senior leadership as it attempts to break Nvidia's grip on AI software.
According to reporting by Unite.AI, citing Qualcomm's official press release, Lattner takes on the role of executive vice president of advanced AI software and platforms at the chipmaker. The deal was signed as a definitive agreement on June 21, 2026, and announced three days later at Qualcomm's investor day. An all-stock bet worth billions
The currency is Qualcomm equity. According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Qualcomm expects to issue up to 19.2 million shares of its common stock to Modular's equity owners. Multiple outlets have pegged the deal's value at roughly $3.9 billion to $4 billion. Because the shares are issued as a private placement rather than a registered offering, Modular's investors and employees receive restricted Qualcomm stock rather than securities they can sell on day one, with closing adjustments still able to move the final count.
Modular raised $380 million across three rounds after Lattner and Tim Davis, both previously at Google, founded the company in 2022. Its last private valuation came in September 2025, when Modular raised $250 million at a $1.6 billion valuation in a round led by Thomas Tull's US Innovative Technology fund, with DFJ Growth joining as a new investor and existing backers General Catalyst and Greylock participating. GV, Google's venture arm, led the company's first financing in 2022.
The products survive
The clearest signal that Qualcomm bought a business rather than merely a team is that Modular's product line carries over intact. Three things survive the transaction, each with what Qualcomm describes as expanded investment.
First, Mojo, the Python-like systems language Modular built for writing GPU and CPU kernels, continues as a product and brand. Second, MAX, its inference serving framework, remains in active development. Third, Modular Cloud, the company's hosted platform, keeps operating. Crucially, support continues across CPUs, GPUs, NPUs, and custom silicon, including hardware that Qualcomm itself does not manufacture.
That last point matters. Lattner keeps the platform roadmap, now as a Qualcomm executive vice president, and Mojo, MAX, and Modular Cloud will keep shipping on rival vendors' chips even as Qualcomm's own AI accelerators come to market.
Taking aim at Nvidia's software moat
The strategic logic behind the deal is a direct assault on the foundation of Nvidia's dominance. For years, Nvidia's CUDA software ecosystem has been the stickiest part of its competitive position, the layer that makes it costly and painful to move workloads onto competing accelerators. Qualcomm's framing, articulated by Chief Executive Cristiano Amon, is that Modular's platform enables a new and open approach to AI software development, letting AI run efficiently across any hardware while maximizing performance.
The near-term promise is day-zero performance. Qualcomm has said that Modular's platform will let new Qualcomm AI hardware run well from launch instead of waiting for a developer ecosystem to form organically around it. The company's data center roadmap is what that promise will be measured against.
Part of a bigger diversification play
The acquisition is a piece of a much larger strategic pivot. At its June investor day, Qualcomm raised its fiscal 2029 targets to $40 billion in non-handset revenue, roughly twice its prior goal, with more than $15 billion of that coming from the data center. Handsets, the business Qualcomm is best known for, are projected to supply only about a third of chip revenue by then, alongside growth in automotive, robotics, and industrial edge deployments.
Buying the toolchain outright also puts Qualcomm in a different position from peers that have poured capital into the model layer, from Nvidia's stake in Safe Superintelligence to AMD's multibillion-dollar bet on Anthropic. Qualcomm now owns the compiler, the serving framework, and the programming language, plus the team that wrote them, at a company that had grown past 130 people by late 2025.
Lattner's remit spans Qualcomm's platforms from edge devices to the data center. Whether Modular's technology can truly erode the CUDA advantage that has underpinned Nvidia's ascendancy remains an open question, but with the deal now closed, Qualcomm has committed both the capital and the engineering talent to find out.
