Reddit's share of citations in ChatGPT Search results collapsed by 86.4% in just four days, according to new data from the AI visibility platform Promptwatch — a sudden drop that coincided with changes to how OpenAI's search product retrieves information, and a stark reminder of how quickly AI platforms can rewrite the traffic map of the web.
Between July 18 and August 7, Reddit accounted for an average of 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations. That share fell below 1% on August 14 and then averaged just 0.52% through August 17, Promptwatch reported. The analysis is based on millions of AI responses collected from the live interfaces of major AI platforms, counting Reddit's share of citations among responses that included at least one citation. It is one of the sharpest single-platform shifts documented this year in AI industry coverage.
Two Drops in Ten Days
The decline actually came in two stages, Promptwatch found, after weeks in which Reddit's citation share had been remarkably stable.
The first slip came on August 8 — the same day Promptwatch says ChatGPT Search changed its query fan-out behavior. Fan-out is the technique of splitting a user's question into multiple behind-the-scenes searches before synthesizing an answer; changing how those sub-queries are generated can change which sites get pulled into the results. That first dip took Reddit from the high 3% range into the mid 2% range.
Six days later came the bigger fall. Starting August 14, Reddit's share dropped below 1% and stayed there, averaging 0.52% through August 17. Measured across the four days, the slide works out to an 86.4% collapse in Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations — effectively removing the platform that AI answers have leaned on more than almost any other.
Google's AI Answers Show No Similar Cliff
The change appears unique to ChatGPT. Promptwatch analyzed Google's AI products over the same window and found no comparable one-day decline. Reddit's share of citations in Google AI Overviews declined only gradually, from about 2.5% in early July to roughly 2.1% in August. Google's AI Mode showed a similar pattern: a modest slide that began at the end of July and continued over the following weeks.
That divergence matters. If Reddit itself had changed something — restricting crawlers, for instance — the effect would presumably show up across AI platforms at roughly the same time. A cliff in ChatGPT citations alone points to a change on OpenAI's side, in how its search pipeline selects, ranks and quotes the sources behind its answers.
OpenAI has not publicly commented on the shift, and Promptwatch's data measures outcomes, not the systems that produced them.
Why It Matters for Publishers and Reddit
Reddit has been the most-cited source by AI platforms for a long time, Search Engine Land noted, which made it one of the biggest beneficiaries of the shift from traditional search to AI-generated answers. Communities, publishers and even product teams have increasingly optimized for citation inside AI answers, treating visibility in ChatGPT the way an earlier generation treated ranking on page one of Google.
A structural demotion inside ChatGPT Search therefore hits more than Reddit's vanity metrics. It affects how much traffic and brand exposure Reddit and its communities receive from AI users, and it sends a signal to every other publisher that has come to count on AI referrals: the platforms giveth, and the platforms can taketh away with a single tuning change.
The story has spread quickly across the search industry. Forbes reported on Thursday that Reddit had "nearly vanished" from ChatGPT citations after the OpenAI search change, and Search Engine Journal cautioned that the drop is not fully explained by publicly known changes. Gizmodo went further earlier in the week, framing the data as evidence that "OpenAI is backing away from Reddit" just as Reddit builds out its own AI answers business.
Read the Caveats Before Panicking
Promptwatch itself is careful about what the numbers show — and what they do not. The data reveals when the shift occurred, not why it occurred, the company said, and the findings are provisional while monitoring continues. Promptwatch said it cannot rule out a data collection issue, cannot explain why Reddit appeared less often in ChatGPT citations, and cannot say whether the decline reflects a lasting change in source selection or a temporary artifact.
The analysis also measures Reddit's share of citations among responses that included at least one citation — a relative figure. If ChatGPT's overall citing behavior changed in the same period, the share would shift even if the absolute number of Reddit citations had not.
For anyone whose business depends on AI referrals, the episode is the lesson: AI platforms can change which sources they surface with little warning, and the only real defense is watching your own citation and referral trends day by day.
