Anthropic has unveiled Claude Opus 5, a new AI model the company says delivers near-frontier intelligence at roughly half the price of its top-tier Fable 5 model. Released on July 24, 2026, Opus 5 is now the default model on Claude Max and the strongest model available on Claude Pro, positioning it as Anthropic's everyday workhorse for coding, autonomous agents, and professional knowledge work.

The launch lands at a moment when businesses are scrutinizing AI spending. According to CNBC, the new model "rivals Fable 5 and is cheaper as businesses fret about costs," while Bloomberg characterized it as a "more cost-efficient model for everyday tasks." Benchmark Performance: New State-of-the-Art on Coding and Knowledge Work

Anthropic reports that Opus 5 posts state-of-the-art results on coding and knowledge-work evaluations including Frontier-Bench and GDPval-AA. On Frontier-Bench v0.1, the company says Opus 5 surpasses all other models and more than doubles the performance of its predecessor, Opus 4.8, at a lower cost per task.

On CursorBench 3.2, Opus 5 comes within 0.5% of Fable 5's peak score while costing half as much per task, according to Anthropic's own benchmarks. Decrypt noted that the model "outscores Fable 5 on most benchmarks — at half the price."

The gains extend to agentic and problem-solving evaluations:

Stronger Agency and Self-Verification

A recurring theme in the announcement is Opus 5's improved ability to verify its own work and iterate until it succeeds. Anthropic described several examples from early-access testing that highlight this autonomy.

In one Frontier-Bench task, the model was given a drawing of a machine part and asked to write code to reconstruct it as a 3D FreeCAD model — but was deliberately given no way to view the drawing directly. Opus 5 reportedly wrote its own computer-vision pipeline to extract geometry from raw pixels, then rebuilt the full part, succeeding repeatedly where no competing model could solve the task after five attempts.

Given a real bug in a popular open-source package manager, Opus 5 found the root cause and fixed an edge case that the community's own patch had missed, whereas a competing model fixed only the surface symptom and declared the bug resolved. An engineer at a trading firm reportedly used Opus 5 to build a market-data feed for a new exchange in a single session — a task previous models could not complete at all — and, finding no live feed to validate against, the model built its own test harness.

Scott Wu, CEO of Cognition (maker of the Devin coding agent), said Opus 5 "approaches Fable-level performance at half the cost" and shows "particular strength on difficult debugging and root-cause analysis tasks." Sualeh Asif, co-founder of Cursor, said the model delivers "near Fable 5 intelligence at Opus speed and cost."

Wade Foster, CEO of Zapier, reported that Opus 5 "topped Zapier's AutomationBench leaderboard without spending more tokens than prior Claude models," completing a full churn-prevention workflow end to end — flagging at-risk accounts, alerting the right owner, and summarizing for retention teams. Previous models did not pass; Opus 5 hit 100%.

Gains in Scientific Research

Anthropic also highlighted Opus 5's improvements for scientific work. The model outperforms Opus 4.8 on every one of Anthropic's life-sciences evaluations, covering structural biology, organic chemistry, and bioinformatics. The company pointed to a 10.2-percentage-point improvement on an internal organic-chemistry benchmark (inferring molecular structures from spectroscopy data) and a 7.7-point gain on protein-function prediction tasks. One genomics customer described the model as behaving "more like a careful scientist," reaching for the right statistical tests and cross-checking its own results.

The Pricing Strategy

By pricing Opus 5 at the same level as Opus 4.8 while approaching Fable 5's intelligence, Anthropic is effectively narrowing the gap between its mid-tier and flagship offerings. VentureBeat framed the release as "a cheaper AI model for coding, agents and enterprise workflows," and Seeking Alpha observed that Opus 5 is "closer & cheaper to frontier model Fable 5."
