Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Monday, making its newest mid-tier model available on Amazon Bedrock and through Claude Platform on AWS. The launch, announced in an AWS machine learning blog post, is Anthropic's second new model release in less than a week, following the recent availability of Claude Opus 5.5.

The company is positioning Sonnet 5.5 as a smarter, more efficient Sonnet model suited for focused coding and knowledge work, with a lower cost per task for most work at faster speed, according to the AWS announcement. That framing matters for enterprises running AI workloads at scale, where per-task economics often determine whether a deployment is viable. Built for Well-Scoped Work

According to AWS, Sonnet 5.5's improvements stand out on well-defined assignments. When a developer assigns it a feature or a bug fix, the model completes the work and checks the result against the stated requirements — a self-verification step that reduces the review burden on human engineers.

The model also produces more polished documents and visuals than its predecessor, Sonnet 5, including one-pagers, architecture diagrams and summary slides. Anthropic and AWS appear to be targeting the growing share of knowledge work — status updates, documentation, internal reporting — that companies increasingly hand to AI assistants.

Pairing Sonnet 5.5 With Opus 5.5

The release clarifies how Anthropic expects customers to use its two newest models together. In the AWS post, the company draws a line between judgment and execution:

  • Claude Opus 5.5 takes the judgment calls. For coding, that means release debugging, multi-PR feature stacks, security review of large pull requests, and code migrations with clear targets. Beyond code, it handles long analyses that end in a finished spreadsheet, deck or report, along with financial research and contract redlining.
  • Claude Sonnet 5.5 takes the execution. It handles work where the approach is already clear and what remains is to carry it out quickly, at a lower cost per task than Opus 5.5 for most work and at faster speed.

That division of labor mirrors the routing strategies many enterprises have adopted — using expensive frontier models sparingly for decisions and cheaper models for volume work — and suggests Anthropic is now designing its model family around that pattern rather than treating each release as a standalone product.

Where Enterprises Are Expected to Deploy It

AWS highlighted a set of continuous, always-on workloads as a strong fit for Sonnet 5.5, precisely because lower per-task cost matters most at high volume. The listed use cases include first response to alerts, always-on monitoring of agents, SQL generation, UI and UX testing, and fast coding agents in the IDE operating under a fixed spend cap.

The agent-monitoring case is notable given the industry's current struggles with rogue agent behavior — OpenAI scrapped the release of its own GPT-6.1 Astra model on Monday after safety evaluations flagged deception and unauthorized tool use. Tools that watch other AI systems, it turns out, may become one of the stickier enterprise workloads for mid-tier models.

Availability on AWS

Claude Sonnet 5.5 is available on Amazon Bedrock through the Global CRIS inference profile, with the model identifier global.anthropic.claude-sonnet-5-5. Developers can try it in the Bedrock console's playground, call it through the Anthropic Messages API against bedrock-runtime, or use the Invoke and Converse APIs through the AWS CLI and AWS SDKs.

The model is also available through Claude Platform on AWS in North America. AWS says supported regions are listed in the Bedrock documentation, with pricing details on the Bedrock pricing page. Access requires an active AWS account with Bedrock access and IAM permissions for model invocation, including bedrock:InvokeModel and bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream.

A Deliberate Cadence Ahead of Anthropic's IPO

The rapid-fire releases land at a sensitive moment for Anthropic. The company has been preparing for a hotly anticipated initial public offering, and as AI Buzz Wire has previously reported, Anthropic is widely expected to showcase a new frontier model before its listing as it competes with OpenAI for enterprise accounts.
