OpenAI used its DevDay conference in San Francisco on Tuesday to launch Dots, a new kind of always-on AI agent that lives in ChatGPT and works toward user-defined goals continuously in the background. TechCrunch, which covered the announcement live, described the product as OpenAI's most explicit answer yet to Meta's Muse, the personal agent that has quickly become its closest competitor in the emerging assistant market.
OpenAI describes Dots as "remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything." Unlike Codex or a standard ChatGPT conversation, a dot is not tied to any specific hardware or interface. It operates independently, pursuing objectives with minimal oversight and reporting back through the channels a user already works in. The New York Times framed the launch as a new AI agent entering the marketplace, while Reuters called it OpenAI's move to take on Meta in an enterprise AI push. What a Dot Actually Is
The concept is deliberately personal. "Today, you can start with your primary dot, give it a name, and make it your own," OpenAI said in its announcement post, adding that over time it envisions "teams of Dots working together on your behalf," according to TechCrunch. Engadget reports that controlling several dots at once is on the roadmap.
Visually, the branding is a sharp departure for OpenAI. Dots are represented as small, floating, cartoonish characters — TechCrunch's dry summary: "The Dots look like… well, dots." The bubbly persona mirrors the approach Meta took with Muse, as both companies try to make persistent AI agents feel approachable rather than utilitarian.
Under the hood, TechCrunch reports that Dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra — notable given that OpenAI scrapped the next-generation GPT-6.1 Astra release on Monday over safety concerns. The current Astra model, already serving paying customers, remains the engine for OpenAI's most ambitious agent product.
Availability: Pro and Business Premium First
Dots are available starting Tuesday inside ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, with the option to launch a dot from either ChatGPT or Codex. Users can message their dots through Slack, Teams and other organizational platforms, and OpenAI says text message support is coming soon.
The examples OpenAI offered sketch out the intended workload. In one scenario, a software developer deploys a dedicated dot to monitor customer feedback and implement bug fixes and requested features as they come in. In another, a scientist uses a dot to rerun analysis and investigate unexpected results as new experimental data arrives. The common thread is persistence — the agent keeps working between conversations.
OpenAI is also introducing what it calls "specialist Dots": agents provisioned with specific identities, credentials and tool access through a customer's existing systems, TechCrunch reported. That design turns a dot from a chat novelty into something closer to a managed service account with a personality.
Enterprise Controls Through Microsoft Agent 365
The enterprise story is where OpenAI is differentiate most clearly. OpenAI is working with Microsoft to integrate Dots into Agent 365, Microsoft's security control plane for AI agents, according to the announcement. For IT departments already wary of autonomous agents holding credentials, native integration into an identity and security layer is a meaningful concession — and a sign that OpenAI expects corporate deployments, not just consumer tinkering, to drive adoption.
Much of what Dots bundle was already technically possible through Codex and similar agentic harnesses, TechCrunch noted. The product's contribution is packaging: continuous goals, identity, messaging integrations and a persona in one consumer-friendly product. Bloomberg and Fortune both reported that the Dots launch came alongside a new $500 monthly subscription tier, the premium plan that had been rumored for weeks and now becomes the top of OpenAI's consumer lineup.
The Security Question Hanging Over the Launch
